Useful Information
Listed below are some basics which are useful to know, whether you’re new to walking or an experienced mountaineer. We want to be sure you enjoy walking with the Lilidots.
Safety on the Hills
It is important to know that the group, and the walks do not have a leader so every woman must be prepared to take full responsibility for herself.
We walk as a group, setting a pace that is comfortable for everyone, Do let someone know if you feel it is too fast or too slow for you. If you want to turn back during a walk then please let the organiser know and if necessary someone will walk back with you.
Navigation and maps
Bring a compass and a map of the planned walk and learn how to use them, some Lilidots are experienced navigators but no one is infallible and whilst they will be happy to share their knowledge if this is new to you, you must be aware that following others in mountainous areas can be risky. Occasionally we organise navigation courses and this would usually happen at full weekends away.
The distance and estimated time required for each walk are planned according to the time of year and available daylight, but it is possible that we may be delayed on the hill, so it is best to have a head torch or a hand torch in your kit to walk safely off in poor light.
The Organisers
We encourage and welcome everyone to volunteer to organise a walk. Some Lilidots prefer to share this responsibility between two as it eases the pressure.
Organisers are responsible for the planning and coordinating each walk, the route to be taken, the meeting place and the transport arrangements. They are not responsible for leading the group on the walk.
Walk Logistics
It is important to update your RSVP if you are unable to attend. We try and share transport as efficiently as possible and spread the costs of travelling. If you need or can provide transport, the walk organiser can plan for car sharing with the driver, splitting fuel costs equally with the passengers. Please bring some cash so that you can pay the driver on the day, and for your donation of £2.00 for the Meetup sub.
We try and make the walks as accessible as possible and the organiser can advise about public transport options. If required, we can try to arrange for you to be met somewhere to travel onwards with other Lilidots.
Please be on time to meet your lift and to get to the start of the walk. Consider where you are going and the time it takes to follow minor roads into the hills and plan accordingly.
The starting point of the walk and where to park will be clearly identified on the Meetup app. Leaving on time means we are more likely to complete the walk during daylight and it gives us enough time at the end for a ‘teashop’ stop before we head for home.
Weekend Events
We always try to have at least one full weekend trip every year, these are very popular, but dependent on volunteers to organise. A shared meal is a regular feature but due to practicalities of quantity and space only Lilidots who have a booked a bed can participate. Others staying elsewhere are welcome to join the group for walking or for drinks afterwards.
Mountain Weather
Mountain Weather Information Service or the Met Office Mountain Weather provide mountain forecasts for all parts of Scotland and are updated daily.
